Google Search Console won't load sitemap.xml: fetch error

So I just finished rolling out this great new site and I am working on the SEO for the site. Obviously, it is important that the sitemap.xml file be processed by Google Search Console. But for no reason at all I am getting a "Couldn't Fetch" error. What the Heck!

I normally use "https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/" or "https://www.web-site-map.com/xml_sitemap.php" to create my site maps and it has been working fine for years. So once I started getting this error it was quite frustracting.

I did try something I had researched which was to add a double "//" to the sitemap being submitted. But it did not work. The blogger indicated that it would only work 50% of the time. So I guess I was in the 50% that would not work. So I decided to just add an additional folder between the root folder and the sitemap.xml.

Steps:

  • Create a new folder (ie. sitemap) then copy your sitemap.xml to that folder
  • Through the Google Search Console, click sitemap from menu
  • Type in site field your new sitemap with the new folder included. ie http://www.house----.us/sitemap/sitemap.xml
  • Click enter and you should soon see that the new sitemap.xml got processed.
